Top 5 Road Trip Routes In The Northeastern US

Whether you're a fan of the classics or have yet to make the journey down the highway and across the state, there's a road trip route that's right for you. Traveling in The Northeastern United States allows you to take in some spectacular sites from top to bottom, from quaint towns and romantic lakeside accommodations, to iconic landmarks along with bustling cities and bustling port cities. Here are our top five picks for road trip routes in The Northeastern US for visitors looking for ample adventure on their next adventure!

Here Are Top 5 Road Trip Routes In The Northeastern US:

1. Upper Delaware River Valley

State Route 97 in the Upper Delaware River Valley of Upstate New York is a long, curving mountain highway that follows the Delaware River, which forms a natural border between New York State and Pennsylvania. It includes the 70-mile section known as the Hawk's Nest and takes about an hour and a half to complete the route. It is undoubtedly the prettiest way to travel between two cities.

2. Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park in Upstate New York has been nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the East" for its dramatic gorge that drops 600 feet into the Genesee River below. The best place to get into the park is at the southern entrance in the town of Portageville, which is just over an hour from either Rochester or Buffalo. You can drive the length of the entire park and come out at the north end, which isn't even 20 miles long. But factor in plenty of time for pulling over, taking pictures, and hiking around the gorge. While visiting Letchworth, take some time to check out spectacular views of waterfalls and admire a rare stand of hemlocks. On your way back through Portageville, be sure to stop in at Niagara Falls and watch this natural wonder from both sides of the falls.

3. The Adirondacks

In the remote northeastern part of New York state, there are 46 rounded peaks that soar roughly 4,000 feet or more toward the sky. This scenic drive starts in North Creek, New York—about an hour and a half north of Albany. From North Creek, drive on Route 28N as it loops around through the forest and mountains. Once you reach Blue Mountain Lake, Route 28N turns into Route 28S. Keep weaving through the many lakes until you reach Old Forge. The entire route is nearly 90 miles and has plenty of opportunities for stopping the car and enjoying nature.

4. The Vermont Shore

Vermont's lovely Lake Champlain provides a canoe safari and an abundance of waterfront beauty. The town of Shelburne is a picturesque launch point for taking a leisurely drive along the shoreline of Lake Champlain.
The drive should take about 1 hour. Start at Shelburne Farms (from Shelburne, VT), a 1,400 acre farm built on Lake Champlain. Pick up Route 7 South to Mt Philo State Park in Charlotte, Vermont. Continue on Route 7 South to Route 22A through Vergennes and out to Button Bay State Park (from Rutland, VT). Once there, you can hike along a bluff overlooking Lake Champlain or even rent a boat and get out on the water.

5. The Mohawk Trail

The Mohawk Trail, also called Route 2, leads to bucolic scenes that seem little altered over the past century. Famous for its sharp Hairpin Turn, which looks out over the Hoosac Valley, it's a drive you'll particularly want to savor in the fall. Allow time to hike a portion of the Mahican-Mohawk Trail that runs through the Mohawk Trail State Forest in Charlemont. It follows the original footpath trod by New England's earliest inhabitants.

Conclusion

It's important not to overlook the northeastern United States when it comes to planning a road trip. There are plenty of worthwhile destinations throughout this region, including many national parks and state parks, which means that you can find an area that suits your needs. The truth is that you could even find several areas to visit on a single trip, just like we did when we made our list of the top five routes in the northeast. We hope you manage to see these areas for yourself someday!
